Parents Demand Justice as Court Hears Gut-Wrenching Testimony in Table View Tragedy

CAPE TOWN, SOUTH AFRICA - A courtroom in Cape Town was filled with emotion as parents Maria and Jesper Otterbeck recounted the devastating impact of their son Aksel Otterbeck's untimely death. Aksel, a 19-year-old Swedish volunteer, lost his life on December 14, 2016, when he was struck by a vehicle driven by Darryl Futter in Table View. Seven years on, Aksel's parents are seeking justice, insisting on prison time for Futter, who recently offered a belated apology for his actions.

Aksel's demise unfolded on Arum Road when a car driven by Futter plowed into him and a group of NGO volunteers. The collision was so severe that Aksel died at the scene despite paramedic efforts, leaving every bone in his body shattered. Six other volunteers were also injured, including Meshi Yehudai, who ended up in a coma and had to be repatriated to Israel due to deteriorating health.

During the sentencing hearing, Maria, an accomplished writer, described how the tragedy plunged her into depression, costing her both her job and her social life. Similarly, Jesper's testimony painted a picture of a man shattered by grief, relying on psychiatric help to cope with his overwhelming pain and sleep deprivation. Their emotional statements were punctuated with breaks to allow for composure, as the magnitude of their loss was laid bare in court.

While Futter was convicted of culpable homicide and negligent driving, he was acquitted on charges of drunk driving. Caro Smit, the founder of South Africans Against Drunk Driving, voiced her frustration at the court's decision, citing testimonies of Futter's intoxication. The sentencing is set to be finalized on a date after further arguments on April 24.

The case underscores the ongoing battle against drunk driving in South Africa. With over 4,160 drivers arrested in December 2023 alone and stringent laws in place, including possible jail time and hefty fines, the country continues to grapple with the scourge of alcohol-impaired driving.
