In a spate of violence that has shocked the community of Brown’s Farm in Philippi, Cape Town, a family has been forced to abandon their home following the murders of two brothers in just over a week. Siseko Mkhize, aged 17, was the first to be brutally taken away when he was fatally shot after apparently capturing footage of alleged extortionists terrorizing a local spaza shop. His brother, Simphiwe Mkhize, tragically met the same fate only 10 days later, leading to their grief-stricken family fleeing for their safety.

The nightmare began when Siseko was targeted by suspects in the Siyahlala informal settlement. Witnesses reported that upon recording the extortionists, Siseko was pursued to his home and mercilessly shot multiple times with a rifle - his attackers going so far as to break into the shack where he had sought refuge. The tragedy struck the Mkhize family again when, amid prayers for Siseko and the preparations for his final journey back to the Eastern Cape, assailants fired upon the gathered mourners, claiming Simphiwe’s life and injuring others.

Local residents have expressed their horror and fear as the double tragedy unfolded, leaving many to speculate about the killers’ motives and the safety of the community. However, the silence remains unbroken, with law enforcement yet to identify and apprehend the suspects.

The leaked police report gives a chilling account of Siseko’s last moments, revealing the intensity and brutality of spaza shop extortion – a dangerous activity that has become increasingly prevalent in parts of the Western Cape. Unfortunately, in their haste, the assailants snatched the wrong cellphone, leaving behind the one holding the evidence of their crimes. This phone was later taken by the police. Siseko, grievously wounded, succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.

Shedding light on the broader context of violence, Police Minister Bheki Cele disclosed recent crime statistics that indicate a rise in murders, linking over 400 to vigilante actions and mob justice – a staggering representation of lawlessness. Cele’s report emphasized the gravity of the situation with numerous arrests and convictions but also underscored the work that remains in combatting such violent crimes.

Nyanga police are thoroughly investigating the incidents, classified as murder and attempted murder, and are appealing to the public for any information that could lead to arrests. The community is urged to come forward and assist, reaching out to Crime Stop to ensure that justice is served for the Mkhize family and to prevent further tragedies.

The murders of Siseko and Simphiwe Mkhize are a stark reminder of the critical need for intensified action against crime syndicates and a stronger community-police partnership to tackle the scourge of violence and extortion in vulnerable communities.
