Brave Good Samaritans Save Father and Baby from Drowning at Kalk Bay

In an extraordinary display of gallantry, two valiant locals at the Kalk Bay harbour became the embodiment of heroism as they saved a father and his six-month-old child from the unforgiving currents after a wave washed them into the harbour last Saturday. As reported by National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) spokesperson Craig Lambinon, the distressing incident took place just after midday, prompting the Simon’s Town NSRI duty crew to spring into action upon receiving reports from eyewitnesses.

In what was a matter of life and death, the NSRI along with the City's water rescue network, coast watchers, and rescue swimmers mobilized swiftly, with the Cape Medical Response (CMR) also being activated. The situation grew tense when it was learned that a toddler had been swept over the harbour pier in his stroller by a surprise wave, which also sent several pedestrians stumbling.

Coming to the immediate aid of the father and baby were two quick-thinking Good Samaritans. One, enjoying a family day out, did not hesitate to plunge into the treacherous waters, while the other, an employee at the harbour, wasted no time joining the rescue effort. With the father maintaining his grip on the child, the Samaritans managed to pull both to safety.

Meanwhile, a third harbour worker, witnessing the perilous scene unfold, dove into the water and retrieved the stroller, along with some other belongings. In an impressive fortuitous coincidence, an NSRI station commander happened to be nearby on his private boat and hastened over to offer assistance. His timely arrival was crucial, although by that point, all parties had safely exited the water. However, immediate medical aid was still a necessity.

Upon the rescue team's arrival, the CMR paramedics swept into action, providing medical attention to the child and father, both of whom were stable but required hospitalization for potential non-fatal drowning symptoms. It was noted by Lambinon that the Muizenberg residents frequented Kalk Bay, highlighting the unpredictability of such harrowing occurrences at familiar locales.

The pivotal actions of the Samaritans drew praise not only from Lambinon but the entire community—including eyewitnesses like Valerio Paci, who recognized the valor of a diver known only as Tony. Tony's decision to risk his own life to save others was a testament to the indomitable human spirit. In times of crisis, the solidarity among bystanders, family members, and the professional rescue team underscored a collective commitment to preserving life.
