ANC to Dismiss Three North West Mayors Amid Nepotism Allegations

In a significant move within the ranks of the African National Congress (ANC), the party's national working committee has demanded the removal of three mayors in the Bojanala District, North West Province. This comes after allegations of nepotism and insubordination surfaced, sparking internal conflict and public debate.

The ANC headquarters at Luthuli House have explicitly called for the recall of Madibeng mayor Douglas Maimane along with his counterparts, Moses Kotane’s Nketu Nkotswe, and Bojanala platinum district municipal mayor Matlakala Nondzaba. A motion of no confidence against Mayor Maimane has been presented by the opposition Save Madibeng party, otherwise recognized as Save South Africa, which holds a seat in the municipal council. The party has accused Maimane of involving his son in a municipal project and questioned certain appointments made in his office.

The contentious renovation project of a local hall in Brits, which falls under Madibeng municipality, was brought into the limelight by Sydney Monnakgotla, the convenor of Save Madibeng. The work was conducted as a social labour initiative, funded by a mining company in alignment with the municipality’s integrated development plan. Monnakgotla’s insistence upon accountability has propelled the issue to center stage in local politics.

Mayor Maimane's alleged nepotistic actions have led to an ongoing investigation by the public protector, reflecting broader concerns over governance and ethics in municipal administrations. The ANC's decision to have him and the other two mayors removed signals an intolerance for what they describe as a “tendency to purge opponents” within municipalities and a defiance against party directives.

While the regional ANC committee had endeavoured to excise Nondzaba from her position, they were hindered by the party's provincial executive committee. Despite this, Nondzaba was subsequently dismissed on different grounds and succeeded by Victoria Makhaula.

This development underscores a crucial moment for the ANC as it aims to uphold the integrity and adherence to the party's core values and instructions. As political dynamics unfold, the fate of the mayors hangs in the balance, with implications for the ANC’s internal cohesion and public trust in the wake of these allegations.

The submission of the no-confidence motion against Mayor Maimane is expected to be deliberated in an ordinary council meeting, setting the stage for possible political reshuffles that will define the party's commitment to transparency and ethical leadership, as well as its strategies to manage dissent and disciplinary issues within its structure.
