Mauritania’s President Ould Ghazouani Ascends to African Union Leadership

South Africa’s own President Cyril Ramaphosa joined other African leaders in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to witness a significant change in the leadership of the African Union (AU). The 37th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government marked the transition of the AU Chairmanship to President Mohamed Ould Ghazouani of Mauritania.

The responsibility of providing direction and momentum for the African Union's initiatives has now passed from Azali Assoumani, the President of Comoros, to President Ghazouani, who confidently expressed his readiness to helm the continental organization. Assuming this prestigious role, Ghazouani emphasized the AU’s mission encapsulated in Agenda 2063 – a strategic framework aiming for an integrated, prosperous and peaceful Africa, driven by its citizens and representing a dynamic force in the global arena.

A decisive element in achieving this vision, Ghazouani highlighted, is the optimal utilization of human resources coupled with an educational system that is responsive to emerging technologies. This sentiment echoes the broader AU position that education is a cornerstone for sustainable development, peace, and security throughout the continent.

South Africa’s International Relations Minister, Naledi Pandor, praised the peaceful transition of leadership and brought attention to the critical theme of education and its alignment with 21st-century skills such as engineering, information communication technology, and artificial intelligence. Minister Pandor’s reflection on South Africa's strides towards universal education acts as a reminder of the continent's progress and the challenges ahead.

President Ghazouani’s tenure as Chairman is expected to further catalyze cooperation among member states and accelerate the continent’s development trajectory, in line with the long-term aspirations of Agenda 2063. The commitment to creating a transformed Africa is also a call to improve access to quality education that is adaptable to new technologies, ensuring the continent's youth are well-equipped for the future.
