EFF Denounces Gauteng Premier Lesufi Over CCTV Initiative Amidst Credit Conflicts

In a recent statement that has ignited political controversy, the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) in Gauteng have sharply criticized Premier Panyaza Lesufi over the launch of an extensive Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) camera network. The initiative, which aims to deploy around 6,000 CCTV cameras to monitor 30 crime hotspots across the province, was announced on Thursday, 15 February, as a measure to combat the rampant crime in the region.

At the heart of the installation of these high-tech security cameras is a Memorandum of Understanding between the Gauteng Provincial Government and Vumacam, a private entity, targeting dense urban areas such as townships, informal settlements, business districts, and suburbs.

However, Lesufi's claim of progress has ruffled the feathers of the EFF, particularly the remarks of its provincial chairman, Nkululeki Dunga. Dunga vehemently disputes Lesufi's association with the project, asserting that it falls squarely under the jurisdiction of the City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality's Department of Public Safety.

The point of contention is that the credit for these efforts, according to Dunga, should go to MMC Commissar Dr. Mgcini Tshwaku, not to Lesufi. Dunga accused the premier of presenting a façade of industriousness for the cameras, while allegedly neglecting the more challenging aspects of program implementation and failing to provide the necessary financial backing where it mattered most.

Adding fuel to the fire, Dunga also claimed Lesufi had overstepped his bounds by dispatching a force he referred to as "amapanyaza," or crime wardens, to manage the surveillance systems unilaterally and without proper coordination with the city's authorities. The move, he claimed, not only symbolizes a profound lack of respect for the city's administration but also poses a risk to the public service operation's security framework.

In the face of this backlash, Premier Lesufi has maintained a steadfast resolve, portraying confidence in his strategy to combat crime. Beyond the installation of these CCTV cameras, he is looking to further reinforce the efforts against criminal activities by expanding the Crime Prevention Wardens (CPWs) cadre and creating a specialized tactical response team with a focus on tackling taxi violence, kidnappings, land invasions, and the protection of government construction projects in the area.

This development marks another chapter in the ongoing tensions between the EFF and the current provincial administration, highlighting the complexities of governance and credit attribution in public safety initiatives.
