Devastating Floods Hit Nongoma: Urgent Call to Avoid Dangerous Crossings

Torrential rainfall has wreaked havoc in the town of Nongoma in KwaZulu-Natal, leaving the community in a state of distress. The Department of Cooperative Governance has issued a stark warning to the residents, urging them to stay clear of the overflowing rivers that have become perilous as a result of the heavy rains that swept through the area on Friday.

Nongoma, situated in the northern reaches of the province, is grappling with the aftermath of the severe weather conditions, which have had a considerable impact on the local population. The deluge has affected 600 people, caused significant damage to 78 households, and completely obliterated three homes. Remarkably, amidst the chaos, no injuries or fatalities have been reported, a testament to the community's resilience and perhaps to the quick response of local authorities.

Siboniso Mngadi, who speaks on behalf of the Department of Cooperative Governance, highlighted the scale of the disaster, elaborating on the extent of the damage. "The trail of destruction has compromised crucial public facilities, including schools, a community hall, a church, and power lines operated by Eskom," he stated. The battered infrastructure is a concern, as it affects not only the individual households but also the broader community services and essential utilities.

In response to the calamity, the provincial disaster management teams have been on the ground, meticulously assessing the damage across the affected areas of Nongoma. These teams are instrumental in orchestrating a coordinated response, ensuring that support reaches those in dire need.

Mngadi conveyed that the aid operation is well underway, with the distribution of disaster relief materials being a priority. "Tents, water drums, and plastic sheetings are being handed out to the afflicted households," he commented.
