In a chilling case that has captured the nation's attention, the Polokwane High Court handed down life sentences to a woman and her lover for the meticulously planned and ruthless assassination of her husband, a dedicated police officer in Limpopo.

Tubake Sister Maesela, 44, and Mmamoraba Jacob Mashiba, 41, were convicted for the March 2021 murder of Warrant Officer Mogokolodi Cleopass Digama. The couple, who shared a child, committed an act that would lead to one of the most grievous betrayals imaginable. Digama, a warrant officer stationed at the Apel police station, was heartlessly shot at his friend's shop and robbed of his service weapon and vehicle.

As the case unfolded in court, the details of the murder emerged, painting a harrowing picture of premeditation and betrayal. Mashudu Malabi-Dzhangi, the spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority in Limpopo, conveyed the grisly circumstances surrounding the shooting, which occurred at Lerajane village in the Sekhukhune district. Malabi-Dzhangi disclosed that the burned remains of Digama's vehicle were also discovered.

Digama's death was not the first attempt on his life. The investigations revealed that Maesela had previously attempted to poison her husband. In a sinister twist, it was further uncovered that after the murder, the accused sought supernatural intervention from a traditional healer and resorted to bribing witnesses to cover up their heinous crime.

The prosecution, spearheaded by senior State advocate Lerato Mohlaka, urged the court to maintain a hard stance against such barbaric offenses, emphasizing the premeditated, remorseless nature of the crime. The prosecution's case was strengthened by Digama's haunting final words to his wife, questioning if she was responsible for his imminent demise. Tragically, it was indeed Maesela who, without hesitation, pulled the trigger three times, squarely executing her husband.

Acting Judge Ephraim Makgoba issued a life sentence to both Maesela and her paramour Mashiba for the murder. Additional sentences for illegal firearm possession and ammunition were also imposed, but these will be served concurrently with their life sentences. The court's decision, marked by their joint liability for this senseless killing, conveys a stark message about the consequences of such remorseless conduct.

This sentencing comes amidst broader concerns over rising crime rates, with Police Minister Bheki Cele highlighting a notable increase in murders countrywide. Advocate Ivy Thenga, the director of public prosecutions in Limpopo, commended the diligent work of the prosecution and the investigative officers, which led to a convincing conviction in this case.

The community of Limpopo, and the larger South African populace, have been shaken but perhaps granted a sense of closure as justice prevails in the face of such a tragic and senseless act.
