Inmate Escapes During Medical Consultation at Mamelodi Hospital

South Africa's correctional facilities faced a moment of reckoning when Clatta Gumbo, a prisoner serving a life sentence at Baviaanspoort Correctional Centre, escaped from custody during a medical appointment at Mamelodi Hospital. Gumbo, convicted of rape, kidnapping, and assault, eluded security on Monday, setting a manhunt into motion.

The incident occurred while Gumbo was consulting with a dietician, having been referred there by a prison doctor. According to the Department of Correctional Services (DCS) spokesperson Singabakho Nxumalo, it is customary for inmates to be transported to public hospitals for specialized consultations and procedures that are beyond the scope of the correctional facility's in-house medical services. The referral to outside specialists complies with national regulations and human rights mandates, ensuring that inmates receive the necessary healthcare akin to that of ordinary citizens.

The DCS's acknowledgment of inmates' rights to medical care underscores South Africa's commitment to upholding human rights standards even within its prison system. The spokesperson stressed that the decision to send Gumbo to a public hospital was in agreement with the recommendations of medical professionals.

During the appointment, Gumbo managed to disarm a guard and flee the premises. Although the circumstances of the escape are under investigation, the response from DCS was swift, with immediate actions being taken to conduct a thorough review of the event. Nxumalo emphasized that this inquiry aims to unearth the sequence of events leading to the escape, promising transparency and accountability on the part of the department.

The initial admission of Gumbo into the correctional system dates back to August 28, 2018. Since his escape, the correctional facility along with other law enforcement agencies has been actively searching for him. DCS has called upon the community, appealing to anyone with information on Gumbo's whereabouts to come forward and assist by contacting the nearest correctional facility or police station.
