Children Traumatized in Suspected Taxi Race Collision in Manenberg

Parents and the community of Manenberg, Cape Town, are grappling with shock and anger following a harrowing incident yesterday morning that left several children injured. At approximately 7:30 am, a collision involving two taxis and a scholar transport vehicle occurred at the intersection of Govan Mbeki and Duinefontein Roads, right in the heart of Manenberg.

It was a regular morning as children from the areas of Gugulethu were heading to schools in Hanover Park. Nevertheless, the day took a dramatic turn when their transport was caught in the middle of what appeared to be a street race. Eyewitness reports suggested the two taxis involved may have been competing against each other, an act colloquially known as “dicing”, leading to the violent clash that left the taxis wrecked and the children terrified.

The impact was such that one of the taxis finished atop an island, the street sign trapped beneath it. Amidst the chaos, frightened children were seen, with a four-year-old girl crying uncontrollably as she was comforted by officers from the Manenberg police, who later escorted her to school.

The Cape Town Fire and Rescue Services, along with the police, arrived swiftly to the scene. Spokesperson Jermaine Carelse confirmed that 12 children were among those affected by the crash. In total, fifteen people were evaluated at the site, fortunately all with minor injuries classified as "colour code green" indicating no serious harm.

Ian Bennett, the police spokesperson, confirmed the involvement of two taxis and the scholar transport vehicle. He reiterated the remoteness of serious injuries but didn’t shy away from addressing the visible emotional impact on the children. Bennett stated that the particulars of the incident are still under investigation. Although no arrests have been made till now, the case has raised concerns over the safety of children on their commute to school.

Maxine Bezuidenhout, speaking for Traffic Services, asserted their presence at the accident site, but also highlighted the absence of any immediate punitive measures, clarifying that the taxi driver was not arrested nor the vehicles impounded. This detail, in particular, has stirred discussions on road safety protocols and the enforcement of traffic laws, especially concerning unlicensed street racing in urban areas.

This alarming incident brings to light the importance of ensuring the safety of scholar transport and the need for strict measures against reckless driving practices that endanger lives, especially those of children. With the incident's details still becoming clear, authorities are focusing on piecing together the events that led to this unfortunate accident, whilst the community calls for accountability and improved safety for their children.
