Keen Games, a German-based gaming developer, has recently introduced the iconic South African rooibos plant into its latest virtual gaming adventure, Enshrouded. Since its launch on January 24, the game has attracted more than a million players and features the rooibos plant as an essential survival resource within its post-apocalyptic world. Available through early access for Windows PC users, this action-packed survival game engages players with compelling gameplay, intricate base-building, and a unique resource gathering system that underscores the importance of rooibos.

Players, or 'Flameborn,' awaken in Enshrouded as the last beacon of hope for a dying ancient civilization. Their main adversary is the Shroud, an encroaching entity that mutates and absorbs everything it encounters. To reclaim the kingdom from the Shroud's grasp, players must harness powerful weapons, spells, and armor, while facing an onslaught of formidable creatures. The game is designed to test the players' combat skills along with their strategic thinking and creativity, as they can build structures and homes in exceptional detail, unlocking unique items, and crafting legendary weapons.

The role-playing game (RPG) takes the idea of resource collection to the next level by introducing various items, including common materials such as wood, stone, metal, leather cloth, and rare elements like rooibos. This particular shrub plays a significant role in the survival of players and can be found in the "Nomad Highlands region," depicted in its full-bloom state with tiny yellow flowers. Players can utilize the rooibos to create plantations or brew a calming cup of tea - an element that adds depth and authenticity to the in-game experience.

The inclusion of the South African native rooibos in Enshrouded not only emphasizes its global appeal but also shines a spotlight on its cultural significance. Adele du Toit, spokesperson for the Rooibos Council, expressed excitement about rooibos appearing in such an interactive platform. "The fact that rooibos is featured in a popular game like Enshrouded is testimony to its global appeal and will undoubtedly introduce this unique South African product to new and diverse audiences," she said. The real-life popularity of rooibos, especially in Germany where the tea constitutes about 10% of the market, mirrors its virtual significance.

The game comes at a time when South Africa's rooibos exports are thriving, with nearly 10,000 tonnes shipped to over 40 international markets last year. Key importers include Japan, France, Germany, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom - countries that show a strong affinity for this distinctive brew.

Enshrouded creates an immersive gaming experience by weaving real-world items into its fantasy setting. Gamers not only embark on a thrilling quest to save a kingdom, they also get to appreciate and engage with a piece of South African heritage.
