Iran's Foreign Minister Visits Lebanon Amid Gaza Conflict, Seeks Political Solution

In a significant diplomatic maneuver amidst regional turbulence, Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-abdollahian has pointedly visited Beirut, Lebanon, to deliberate on the reverberating impacts of the Israeli offensive in Gaza, making clear Tehran's stance on war and regional security.

At the heart of his message during a joint news conference with Lebanon's Foreign Minister Abdallah Bou Habib, Amir-abdollahian stated, "Iran and Lebanon confirm that war is not the solution, and that we absolutely never sought to expand it,". His visit comes in the wake of intensifying allegations by the United States and Israel, accusing Iran and its allied armed factions across Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, and Yemen of exacerbating tensions through targeted attacks against US and Israeli interests.

Drawing a bold line, Amir-abdollahian proffered a stark warning regarding any extensive assault by Israel on Lebanon, suggesting such an act would signal the demise of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's tenure.

His diplomatic engagement in Beirut involved high-profile talks with Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati, Parliament's Speaker, leaders from the Islamic Jihad Movement and Hamas, and an important meeting with Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah.

The regional discourse is expected to continue as Amir-abdollahian will travel to Damascus and then to Qatar, the principal intermediary in the Israel-Hamas dialogue, underscoring Iran's strategic aspirations to influence Gaza conflict negotiations.

This development surfaces amid Iran's conspicuous absence from a recent Arab ministerial assemblage in Saudi Arabia aiming to shape the post-war agenda in Gaza. Political observers note the exclusion of Iran contrasted with the inclusion of Qatar, hinting at Saudi intentions for an Arab-centric resolution strategy to which Iran seeks involvement.

On the topic of the Gaza war’s conclusion, Iran advocates a political settlement, with Amir-abdollahian having disclosed ongoing discussions with Riyadh to this end.
