Urgent Appeal for Justice in KwaNongoma: Rise Mzansi Demands Arrests in Political Killing and Child’s Death

The small town of KwaNongoma in northern KwaZulu-Natal has become the focus of national attention and concern after a tragic event that left an IFP councillor and a child dead, and several school pupils injured. Rise Mzansi KwaZulu-Natal, a local advocacy group, has issued an impassioned appeal for swift justice, urging the South African Police Service (SAPS) and regional authorities to take immediate action.

In the late hours of a Wednesday afternoon, the local community was shaken by the sounds of gunfire on the R618. The violence claimed the life of a dedicated public servant, an IFP ward councillor of the Nongoma Local Municipality, who was the victim of a calculated ambush during a vehicle breakdown. The assailants, armed and seemingly intent on murder, also opened fire on a nearby scholar transport taxi, leaving innocents caught in the crossfire. Among the wounded were four children, aged between 11 and 12, one of whom tragically succumbed to their injuries.

General Fannie Masemola, National Commissioner of the SAPS, has reacted to the incident by deploying the National Task Team in charge of probing political killings. Moreover, he has ordered the allocation of maximum resources to ensure those responsible are apprehended posthaste.

The incident has resurrected concerns over political violence in the region, with the years following the 2016 and 2021 Local Government Elections marked by turmoil and conflict. Rise Mzansi's KwaZulu-Natal Convenor Nonkululeko Hlongwane-Mhlongo called on the leadership of political factions to instill a sense of accountability among their ranks, with a strong emphasis on cultivating political tolerance.

The organization’s statement not only highlighted the gravity of the crime but also extended its condolences to the families of the deceased and its wishes for a fast recovery for the injured. Rise Mzansi stressed the importance of the electoral process in a democratic system, emphasizing that incidents like these undermine the electorate’s freedom and fairness of choice.
