Joubert Roux, the co-founder and director of Zero Carbon Charge, has expressed confidence that, subject to regulatory approvals, the superchargers should arrive in South Africa by July, with the network's first complete charging facility expected to be operational at Wolmaransstad in the North West by June 2024, marking the first step in this ambitious rollout plan.


South Africa is not a newcomer to the EV charging station scene, already housing over 400 stations with an additional increase anticipated. However, the reliance on Eskom's grid, primarily powered by coal-fired and diesel-operated power stations, undermines the environmental benefits that EVs are supposed to offer. Roux's concerns regarding the use of "dirty" power are driving the push towards establishing Zero Carbon Charge's independent network, which would remain unaffected by load-shedding and offer a truly green alternative.


The construction of Zero Carbon Charge stations will strategically place chargers at intervals of 150 km nationwide, ensuring coverage and convenience for EV motorists. This network will not only supply clean power but will largely contribute to South Africa's decarbonization efforts, skirting the use of Eskom's coal-dependent electricity.
