SPS Acquires New Solar Projects in Western Cape, Boosting Clean Energy and Local Development

Sustainable Power Solutions (SPS), a prominent player in the renewable energy sector, has made significant strides in advancing clean energy in South Africa’s Western Cape. The company has officially acquired two solar projects, each with 5 MW capacity, located in the scenic region of Malmesbury. This notable development comes following SPS’s purchase of shares in Slimsun Too, the company previously holding the development rights to these projects.

The acquisition ensures that SPS now has complete ownership and control over the advancement of these green initiatives. The move underscores SPS's commitment as a forerunner in solar PV and battery storage projects, as it meticulously designs and manages a portfolio to bolster sustainable energy solutions.

Further cementing SPS’s reach in the renewable market is the signing of a power purchase agreement (PPA) with Energy Exchange. This energy trading enterprise is a joint venture between two powerful investment groups, Remgro and Rand Merchant Bank. The PPA arrangement ensures that the energy generated by the new solar plants will have a dedicated offtake route, servicing the customers of Energy Exchange.

Local landowner Anthony Corin of Franco Afrique Technologies has played an instrumental role by providing the site for these projects. The solar plants are set to be constructed on his land, signifying a joint effort to foster renewable energy while drawing on local resources and expertise.

These solar initiatives are expected to make a considerable impact on the community and its infrastructure. Upon completion, they will enhance the local energy grid’s resilience, while simultaneously offering a sustainable and clean power source. This leap forward not only aligns with global sustainability goals but also supports the Western Cape’s transition toward greener energy practices.

The projects are poised to be interconnected seamlessly with the national power framework, thanks to their planned connection to the Eskom Eenboom substation. This strategic move allows for the effective distribution of solar-generated electricity via the established Eskom network, directly to the clientele of Energy Exchange.

SPS has planned a phased approach for the construction and implementation of these plants. The groundbreaking for the first phase is scheduled to happen this month, setting a timeline with a target completion date of May 1 of the coming year. The commencement for the second phase is slated for May 2025 and is anticipated to follow a similar 12-month construction period.

In terms of investment, each solar plant phase boasts an approximate R85-million value. It’s a clear indicator of the significant economic input SPS is contributing to the region's development.

With SPS’s active involvement, Malmesbury is earmarked to witness substantial benefits beyond just the supply of renewable energy. The projects are anticipated to aid in local infrastructure improvements, create jobs, and boost community development, aligning with broader socio-economic growth objectives for the area.
