In a turn of events that has drawn public attention, Deputy Mayor of Tshwane, Dr. Nasiphi Moya, has returned a controversial travel allowance of R10,000 to the city's coffers, ActionSA Gauteng announced. This repayment follows allegations of financial mismanagement by the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), which called for her removal from office if she did not come clean about the alleged misuse of funds during her previous role as chief of staff.

The travel allowance in question was designated for a trip to Saudi Arabia that Dr. Moya was supposed to undertake during her tenure under former Mayor Stevens Mokgalapa. However, the trip did not materialize, and according to EFF, the money was never returned—until now.

ActionSA's Gauteng chairman, Funzi Ngobeni, confirmed on Tuesday, February 6, that the deputy mayor voluntarily repaid the amount in full, including the accrued interest. Despite the city not demanding the funds back, Dr. Moya proactively took steps to resolve the issue. Ngobeni emphasized that Dr. Moya declared no influence over the travel arrangements or the decision to cancel the trip, seeking to clear her of any wrongdoing.

In a move intended to further exhibit transparency and goodwill, the deputy mayor has also made a charitable donation equal to the interest on the returned funds to King's Hope, a women's shelter in Olievenhoutbosch.

The response from the EFF to Dr. Moya's actions has been critical. EF's regional chairman in Tshwane, Obakeng Ramabodu, views the repayment of funds as an admission of guilt. He argues that Dr. Moya should resign, and he intends to open a case against her as well as report the matter to the Public Protector for further investigation.

With the ongoing independent probe by the city manager's office, Tshwane spokesperson Sipho Stuurman has affirmed that the payment does not bring a close to the inquiry. Stuurman verified the transaction and confirmed the city's finance department acknowledged the repayment made on Thursday, February 1.

Despite the controversy, Dr. Moya remains focused on her declared commitment to revitalize Tshwane and elevate its status to a premier, world-class city. This payment has shown her willingness to address issues of accountability and transparency frontally, even as the city awaits the results of the continuing independent investigation.
