Cape Town Train Station Accident Results in Child’s Paralysis

A solid plastic board, suspected to have come loose from a building owned by the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA), plummeted towards the unsuspecting child, resulting in immediate and severe injury. In a state of panic and unfamiliar with the city, Daniels dashed back to the hospital they had left earlier, leading to the boy’s emergency admission to the Intensive Care Unit at the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital.

While Danielle Cargnelutti, the communications officer for the hospital, confirmed the boy's admission, privacy laws prevented the disclosure of any further details regarding his condition. Meanwhile, the child's mother mourned the swift transformation from energetic joy to tragic immobility as doctors delivered the dire diagnosis of paralysis.

The incident, which escaped initial reporting to PRASA or the site contractor, set off a wave of urgency within the agency. Raymond Maseko, PRASA's acting regional manager, stressed the critical nature of the accident, highlighting its status as a reportable incident to the Railway Safety Regulator and the Department of Labour and Employment. PRASA has embarked on an urgent investigation to unearth the facts and comply with the appropriate authorities' guidelines and to establish contact with the affected family.
