Court Exonerates Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana from Bribe Scandal

In a significant legal triumph for South African Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana, the Johannesburg High Court has dismissed allegations of soliciting a R500 million bribe from controversial businessman Mthunzi Mdwaba. The defamation judgment firmly states that Godongwana is indeed innocent of all claims that he demanded a bribe in exchange for a R5 billion government tender.

Presiding over the case, Judge Dario Dosio denounced the allegations against Godongwana as "unlawful and spurious," emphasizing the severe damage these assertions have done to the minister's dignity and the office he represents. The court has further directed that the issue of quantifying damages, the necessity of a public apology, and retraction of the statements be resolved by hearing oral evidence, putting Mdwaba's claims under further scrutiny.

This lawsuit emerged from Godongwana’s urgent application to the court for a retraction and R1 million in damages from Mdwaba, highlighting the severe impact of the allegations on his public persona and career. The controversy relates to claims made by Mdwaba that a job creation initiative involving the Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) was terminated as labour minister Thulas Nxesi, Godongwana, and higher education minister Blade Nzimande allegedly sought undue satisfaction. However, the words of Judge Dosio have set a precedent, determining that baseless accusations cannot be used to tarnish the character of public officials without substantial proof.
