Truck Driver Assaulted Aiding Police in TMPD Chase of Overloaded Bus

In a shocking incident on the Ben Schoeman Highway, a truck driver faced an assault after attempting to assist police officers in the apprehension of an overloaded bus carrying unruly passengers. The Tshwane Metro Police Department (TMPD) was forced into a chase that resulted in multiple arrests and highlighted issues of road safety and immigration.

The chaos unfolded on a typically busy Sunday when TMPD officers, particularly from the accident unit, were performing their diligent duties of road policing. The officers spotted a bus excessively loaded with passengers emanating from the Fountains area heading toward Centurion. The scene presented a clear safety concern, with passengers precariously situated behind the front windscreen, causing the officers to initiate a stop.

However, the bus driver, later found to be in possession of fraudulent documentation, including a fake Zimbabwean driving licence and cross-border permit, failed to comply. Prompted by their passengers, the driver attempted to flee, igniting a dangerous chase on the bustling highway.

TMPD spokesperson Isaac Mahamba detailed the tense moments that followed as the bus refused to halt despite orders. The TMPD's call for reinforcements brought the overload control unit, regional members from Centurion, the tactical response team, and the crime prevention unit to the scene.

In a brave attempt to help the authorities, a truck driver who witnessed the chase tried to block the bus's path. This courageous act, unfortunately, led to his physical assault by irate passengers who had debarked the stopped bus. Moreover, the bus driver further escalated the situation by crashing into a TMPD vehicle.

After a tumultuous stand-off, the bus driver and two Zimbabwean nationals were taken into custody. The charges against them included assault, reckless and negligent driving, illegal immigration, damage to property, and obstruction of justice. Meanwhile, several other occupants of the bus managed to flee the scene.

The bus in question was subsequently impounded, and the arrested individuals are poised to soon face the consequences of their actions in court.
