As South Africa gears up for its upcoming elections, the Electoral Commission (IEC) has embarked on a mission to sign up as many eligible voters as possible. The final registration weekend, slated for February 3 and 4, promises to be a pivotal period in the preparation for the elections. After a successful drive last November, wherein approximately one million new voters were added to the roll, the IEC is determined to outdo itself.

With a current voters' roll standing at just over 26 million, contrasted by the potential of 42.3 million eligible voters, the stakes are high. Chief Electoral Officer Sy Mamabolo expressed confidence in the Commission's readiness and its intent to provide a registration experience that surpasses previous efforts. The overarching goal is to get as many qualifying participants registered, accurately allocating them to their respective wards, and facilitating an informed electorate, ready to make their voices heard.

Mamabolo conveyed the IEC's strategic approach to overcoming the challenges faced during the previous registration drive. Issues such as voting stations being inaccessible due to protests are being addressed in conjunction with NATJOINTS to ensure smooth operations at the registration booths.

In a bid to leave no one behind, the IEC has orchestrated an extensive outreach that extends to prisoners. The week of January 31 will see the electoral body cooperating with the Department of Correctional Services, touring over 200 prisons to encourage inmates to exercise their democratic right. The primary appeal is to the family members of those incarcerated, emphasizing the importance of delivering the necessary identification documents to enable registration.

Simultaneously, South African expatriates are not forgotten. With the implementation of an online registration system, which has seen 7,000 users since December, the IEC further offers an in-person window on the weekend of January 26-28. Embassies, consulates, and high commissions worldwide will open their doors to facilitate voter registration for citizens abroad within a dedicated two-day span, ensuring convenient access to the voters' roll.

The IEC is set to announce its full preparedness next week, solidifying its readiness to conduct a registration weekend which is pivotal to fostering a vibrant and participatory democratic process. The success of this final push before elections has the potential to significantly impact the democratic landscape of South Africa.
