Powerless in Khayelitsha: Eskom Services Suspended after Technician Attack

The residents of Enkanini in Khayelitsha were plunged into darkness for an entire month following a brutal attack on Eskom technicians. The assault, which took place on December 21, 2023, resulted in the suspension of services and left the community without power during what should have been a time of festive celebration.

The Enkanini community faced a dire situation when two Eskom technicians were robbed at gunpoint, an event that forced Eskom to suspend its services due to safety concerns. The essence of the festive season was overshadowed by the prolonged absence of electricity, as families struggled to maintain their daily lives amidst vandalized and unrepaired infrastructure.

For Enkanini's residents, the return of Eskom employees on January 16, 2024, signaled a much-anticipated end to their hardships. A meeting between Eskom representatives and community leaders catalyzed the necessary collaboration to address safety concerns for the technicians.

Residents, like Themba Jayiya, have expressed a mixture of relief and frustration.
