Mvelo Khumalo, aged 31, fell victim to a fatal stabbing on New Year's Eve, allegedly at the hands of a childhood friend after a row erupted over a local traditional dance competition known as ingoma.

According to local reports, Khumalo and his friends were gathered at a local spaza shop, a typical gathering place for community interactions and relaxation, when the argument broke out. Both men were ardent members of a traditional dance group, with aspirations of leading their peers in the annual festive celebration. The dispute, likely exacerbated by the competitive spirit of the event, took a dark turn with tragic consequences.

The relationship between the two men had deep roots, having grown together from childhood into adult life, a bond allegedly tainted by underlying tensions and the suspect's so-called "shady behaviour," as relayed by a family member of the deceased who preferred to remain anonymous. This behaviour had previously been overlooked by Khumalo, in the spirit of camaraderie and loyalty.

The community reels from the incident, with family members expressing their grief and dismay, hoping for a swift and fair legal process. Colonel Robert Netshiunda, a police spokesperson, confirmed the arrest of a 24-year-old man in Ntambanana in connection with the murder, hinting at justice’s forthcoming march.
