Acsa Takes Firm Stance Against Baggage Pilfering at South African Airports

The Airports Company South Africa (Acsa) has emphatically reiterated its zero-tolerance policy regarding baggage pilfering and theft at its facilities following a distressing incident at OR Tambo International Airport. A traveler's baggage was recently tampered with and items were stolen, leading to an outcry for stricter security measures and enhanced protection of passengers' belongings.

Jabulani Khambule, the Acsa regional general manager for OR Tambo, has expressed the company's deep regret and extended a sincere apology to the affected traveler. In a decisive response to the incident, Acsa has pledged full cooperation with the relevant airline and the baggage-handling company. The primary objective is to ensure a thorough investigation that will bring the offenders to justice.

Furthermore, Khambule emphasized the company's commitment to criminal prosecution and the imposition of serious repercussions for any illegal actions by staff, regardless of their employment status with Acsa. He underscored that while airlines are primarily responsible for baggage handling, Acsa stands ready to offer crucial evidence, including video footage, to assist with ongoing inquiries.

Addressing a video that has recently made the rounds on social media, Khambule clarified that the footage depicted an event from four years prior, and the involved employee was accordingly prosecuted and terminated from their position.
