Cape Town Police Uncover 'Pink Cocaine' in Grassy Park Drug Bust

In a concerning development for Cape Town's ongoing battle against illicit substances, Grassy Park police have made a significant discovery: a new type of drug colloquially known as ‘pink cocaine’. During a targeted raid last Thursday, officers arrested a 28-year-old suspect found in possession of 10 sachets of this unknown pink powder-like substance, initially introduced in Spain and known by the name ‘Tucibi’ or ‘Tusi’ on the local streets.

Colonel Dawood Laing, the station commander at Grassy Park, reported that the substance can fetch up to R1 000 for a small sachet, indicating its high demand among wealthier drug users. The law enforcement’s breakthrough came from a tip-off suggesting drug sales at a local residence. With a search warrant, they executed a raid and uncovered the packets of pink cocaine.

The suspect arrested is not a known dealer in the area, which suggests new players entering the drug market. Given the unfamiliarity with the substance among local police, it's feared that many might overlook it during routine checks, mistaking it for something benign due to its distinct color and texture.

This new drug concoction bears a worrying profile. Experts like Ashley Potts, former director of the Cape Town Drug Counselling Centre, warn that it can be laced with a host of dangerous additives, including fentanyl, ecstasy, hallucinogens, and even bath salts. These ingredients not only increase its potency but also significantly elevate the risk of dependency and potential for fatal overdoses.

The police have resolved to ramp up their investigation to trace the origins of this pink cocaine and identify the suppliers. This will involve greater scrutiny and likely cooperation with international counterparts, considering the drug's ties to Spain.

In addition, authorities are calling on citizens to come forward with any information and urging parents to monitor their children’s financial activities to prevent them from falling prey to this new drug.

Community safety MEC Reagen Allen expressed his concerns about the discovery. He underscored the detrimental impact drugs have on families and communities, fueling the pervasive cycle of gang violence and substance addiction.
