South Africa's Data Giants: Over 1 Petabyte Consumed by Top Fibre Users

The digital consumption landscape in South Africa has reached unprecedented levels, with Internet service providers (ISPs) reporting record data usage among fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) subscribers. Gathered feedback indicates at least two individuals exceeded the staggering amount of 1 petabyte (PB), which is the equivalent of 1,000 terabytes (TB), from January to November 2023. These figures showcase the increasing appetite for data-intensive services and content, as well as the evolution of the country's broadband infrastructure.

In a significant spike from previous years, the top data consumers have not only surpassed the 1PB mark but have done so with substantial margins compared to 2022's top figures. These users spearhead a group of at least nine individuals known for their hefty data usage, with several consuming hundreds of terabytes within the same period.

Several factors are contributing to this surge. As South Africa's fibre network operators (FNOs) transition towards offering higher speed packages, the entry-level options—with speeds below 50Mbps—are being systematically phased out. This inevitably encourages heavier data consumption as users can now engage in bandwidth-heavy activities without the limitations of slower internet speeds. Competition among ISPs vying for the premium FTTH market has led to more attractive pricing, especially in the 500Mbps and 1Gbps speed brackets, essentially offering users more bang for their buck.

The types of content consumed have also molded this trend. Users are increasingly opting for high-definition video streaming services; with the rise of 4K viewing options, the data used for watching favorite shows and movies quadruples in comparison to standard 1080p streams. This transition is vividly reflected in the throughput reported by NAPAfrica, the country's largest Internet exchange point, which reached 4Tbps in November 2023.

An example of the heightened data usage comes from an Afrihost customer on Vumatel's network. With a 1Gbps connection, this user averaged around 128TB monthly, hitting a total of 1.412PB in 11 months. Another prominent consumer, also on Afrihost but on a different network, reached 1.291PB. It's riveting to note that Cool Ideas reported a user with an 835TB data consumption on a relatively moderate 50/50Mbps connection, indicating a possible downgrade from a swifter package earlier in the year.

The consumption habits have also translated into the gaming sphere, where significant data usage is attributed to video streaming services and game downloads on platforms like the PlayStation Store and Xbox Live. Netflix remains the heavyweight app leading the traffic, while platforms such as TikTok and Disney+ have seen notable surges as well.

ISPs like Level-7 also tracked a substantial spike in DStv app usage during major sports events, exemplifying the momentous push for data during live streaming events in contrast to traditional social media engagement patterns.

This incremental rise in data usage reiterates the importance of robust and scalable network infrastructures to support the burgeoning demand for Internet services in South Africa. It underscores the need for continuous investment in both network capabilities and technologies that support the transmission of higher quantities of data efficiently and reliably.
