Operation Okae Molao Enforces Law and Order in Ekurhuleni, Brings Hope to Local Community

In an impressive show of force designed to restore law and order to the streets of Dunnotar near Duduza, Ekurhuleni, Operation Okae Molao was set into motion on Thursday, 28 December. Under the leadership of Ekurhuleni District Commissioner Major-General Anna Sithole, a collaboration between various law enforcement agencies has brought about a significant crackdown on criminal activity in the region.

Major-General Sithole expressed grave concerns over the spate of violent crimes in Duduza, including house and business robberies, as well as the distressing frequency of car hijackings. Determined to assert the authority of the state and provide support to the local police station with its crime reduction efforts, Operation Okae Molao saw detectives conducting manhunts since Wednesday, 27 December, one day prior to the full roll-out of the operation. Their efforts resulted in the arrest of an astonishing 202 suspects across the Ekurhuleni metropolitan.

Breaking down the arrests, Sithole revealed that 132 individuals were apprehended for contact offences, which often involve direct violence against persons, such as assault and battery. Contact-related offences, like arson and vandalism, accounted for 19 arrests. A further 28 arrests were made for other serious crimes, whose nature was not detailed, but likely include offenses that pose significant harm to public safety.

In what could be perceived as a major victory for the fight against gender-based violence (GBV) in the region, 35 suspects were arrested in connection with such offenses. GBV remains a persistent issue across South Africa, and the arrests signal a strong stance against it by the authorities.

Enforcement wasn't limited to arrests alone; the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) officers also issued 15 fines that amounted to a collective R5,800. These fines are typically levied for minor infractions, yet they serve as a reminder that law enforcement is paying close attention to all forms of unlawful activity.

Major-General Sithole assured the community that the operation was not a flash in the pan but a sustained effort to ensure the community's sense of safety is restored. Operation Okae Molao plans to maintain a formidable presence in the area until that goal is achieved.

Joggie Roets, from the community policing forum at the Dunnotar police station, expressed gratitude for the police's dedication. The sentiment resonates among local citizens, with residents like Vangile Mashinini from Langaville in Tsakane praising the police for their thorough approach, including the checkpoints for motorists. Mashinini highlighted a secondary benefit of the operation: the rooting out of intoxicated drivers, which would provide a boon to road safety and potentially save lives.
