Rising Toll in KZN Flooding: Seven Lives Lost and Search for Missing Continues

The province of KwaZulu-Natal is reeling from devastating floods that have resulted in the tragic loss of seven lives, with eleven individuals still unaccounted for. The provincial Department of Cooperative Governance confirmed these heartbreaking details, emphasizing the severity of the disaster that has impacted numerous communities.

The youngest victim of this calamity, an eight-year-old boy, tragically drowned on Christmas Day and was later recovered in the Mandeni area. The other fatalities were recorded in Ladysmith, where six people perished as a result of the Bellspruit River bursting its banks. The torrential waters overtook the N11, leaving a scene of destruction in their wake and catching many residents off guard, some fatally in their sleep.

The floodwaters ravaged homes, bridges, and critical infrastructure, with multiple vehicles swept away. In a poignant account, a family member of some of the victims, Johannes Msimango, detailed the loss, sharing that seven individuals in a car caught in the floods were related to him, out of whom only three have been found to date.

Amidst this backdrop of sorrow and urgency, search and rescue operations continue. Humanitarian aid organisations like Al-Imdaad, IPSS Medical Services, and government officials have been working tirelessly on the ground to provide assistance to those affected. Alfred Duma Local Municipality Mayor, Zama Sibisi, described the dire circumstances facing survivors, many of whom have been displaced to a community hall where they are receiving food, blankets, and clothes from charitable groups including Al-Imdaad.

With the threat of additional rainfall looming, disaster management teams across KwaZulu-Natal remain on high alert. A particular concern is for residents in low-lying areas, who have been advised to maintain vigilance in the face of potential further flooding.
