Iran Summons Russia's Envoy Over Islands Dispute Amid Rising Tensions with UAE

Iran has once again demonstrated its intolerance for interference in its territorial disputes by summoning the Russian envoy in Tehran. This move follows a joint statement initiated by Russia and several Arab countries, which implicitly supports the United Arab Emirates' (UAE) claim to three strategic islands that Iran insists are its sovereign territory. This marks the second time Tehran has called upon the Russian Ambassador for this reason, intensifying the diplomatic wrangle over the Greater Tunb, Lesser Tunb, and Abu Musa islands situated in the vital shipping lane of the Strait of Hormuz.

The islands have been a source of contention between Iran and the UAE. However, they have been administered by Iran since British forces pulled out from the region in 1971. The recent support from global players such as Russia and China for the UAE has added another dimension to Iran's foreign policy challenges, especially as it regards these nations among its allies.

The latest joint statement, which emerged from the Russian-Arab Cooperation Forum in Morocco, presented a narrative for “peaceful solutions” through bilateral talks or intervention by the International Court of Justice. This stand evidently triggered Iran's adamant response that questions the very essence of its territorial integrity. Iran's Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the Russian envoy, issuing a strong protest and reinforcing the unshakable status of the islands as Iranian—by essence making any external claims inherently unacceptable.

While Russia formally maintains a stance of respecting Iranian sovereignty, it has not abstained from signing statements that to Tehran seem to undermine this principle. High-level discussions have occurred over the issue. Nasser Kanaani, the Foreign Ministry spokesman, strongly denounced the joint statement, and Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian has conversed with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, who assured that Moscow's respect for Iran’s territorial integrity should not be doubted.

This ongoing dispute has stirred the emotions of Iranian lawmakers who have voiced their opinions on social platforms, asserting that the issue remains non-negotiable and warning against external interventions. The parliament speaker, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, has underscored the principle of mutual respect as the foundation of Iran's growing relationship with Russia, hinting that any threats to Iranian territory will be faced with a serious response. He also noted proactive efforts by Iran to populate and develop the islands, which the parliament will continue to endorse legally.

The tensions evoked by the joint statement have also unshelled critical sentiments from other dignitaries. Some have suggested a shift in Iran's diplomatic language, particularly with the UAE, while another jibed by hinting Russia might as well negotiate with Japan over the Kuril Islands—a different ongoing territorial dispute involving Russia and Japan.

In this geopolitically charged scenario, the discord over the islands not only symbolizes a struggle for territory but for influence in one of the world's most strategic maritime chokepoints. While Iran continues to safeguard its national interests, the blend of regional and international diplomacy, or perhaps a lack thereof, makes the Strait of Hormuz an ever-critical flashpoint on the global stage.
