Shifting Tides in Willem Kruger Case: Murder, Not Accident

In a surprising turn of events, the ongoing investigation into the death of Willem Kruger, whose body was recovered from the Vaal River on November 22, 2022, has shifted from an inquest to a murder case. Kruger was last seen at a bachelor’s party at Henbase Lodge, near Morgenzon, and his disappearance had initially led to an extensive six-day search, which ended with the grim discovery of his vehicle and body in an area previously searched.

Upon recovery of the vehicle, which contained Kruger’s body, several puzzling elements came to light. These included the facts that the vehicle’s gear was in park mode, the handbrake was engaged, the car keys were not found in the ignition, and his mobile phone and vehicle’s tracker had been disabled. These inconsistencies led investigators to re-evaluate the circumstances surrounding Kruger's last moments and eventually prompted the police, in collaboration with the National Prosecution Authority (NPA), to change the course of the investigation from an inquest into murder.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) and NPA are earnestly following leads and have indicated the likelihood of probing charges of defeating the ends of justice and possible perjury against unidentified suspects.
