South Africans have marked their calendars for 8 February 2024 as President Cyril Ramaphosa is set to deliver the much-anticipated State of the Nation Address (Sona) at 7 PM in Cape Town City Hall. This joint sitting of the National Assembly and the National Council of Provinces is more than a formality—it's a momentous occasion celebrating the country's 30th anniversary since the watershed democratic elections of 1994.

The Sona, traditionally an event to jumpstart the parliamentary year, is expected to capture the spirit of a country that has withstood the trials of colonialism and apartheid. In his communication with National Assembly speaker, Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula, and NCOP chairperson, Amos Masondo, President Ramaphosa requested the joint session, marking a pivotal moment in the nation's history.

Parliamentary spokesperson Moloto Mothapo conveys the profound nature of the upcoming year as South Africa commemorates three decades of democracy. It's not just about looking back at the past achievements but also exploring future prospects. This will be the first session following the inauguration of the 7th democratically-elected parliament after elections, and practices are being updated in line with the Electoral Amendment Act of 2023.

The Sona is more than mere ceremony. It assesses the country’s progress, challenges and provides a roadmap for the government's plans for the upcoming financial year.

Reflecting on previous Sona events, earlier in the year 2023, the president’s address was interrupted by a dramatic turn of events as six Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) members, including Floyd Shivambu and Julius Malema, disrupted proceedings by storming the stage. However, they faced consequences for their actions, being found guilty of contempt of parliament, leading to their suspension without pay from 1 to 29 February.

The upcoming 2024 Sona stands as a testament to a nation's resilience and commitment to democracy, honoring the indomitable spirit that transformed a divided country into a beacon of hope and unity. As preparations are underway, the nation looks on with anticipation for a year of reflection and progressive action.
