Tensions Escalate in Zulu Royal Family as Ramaphosa Appeals King Recognition Ruling

The issue of royal succession within the Zulu monarchy has taken another contentious turn as the faction of the Zulu royal family supporting Prince Simakade Zulu expresses their disappointment following President Cyril Ramaphosa's decision to appeal a recent court judgment.

Previously, a high court ruling had declared that the recognition of King Misuzulu as the Zulu king was unlawful and invalid, effectively revoking his certificate of recognition. This verdict came as a triumph for Prince Simakade's faction, which has been vocal about the legitimacy of the succession process following the passing of the previous king, Goodwill Zwelithini.

However, President Ramaphosa's subsequent announcement of an appeal contends that, until the appeal process is concluded, Misuzulu shall remain as the rightful heir to the throne. Prince Thokozani Zulu, a spokesperson for the faction supporting Prince Simakade, stated in no uncertain terms that the public should not be swayed by claims of Misuzulu's current status as king, considering the clarity of the court's decision. He accused President Ramaphosa of hastily recognizing Misuzulu and intervening in the royal house's matters without due consideration of all the relevant voices and opinions within the royal family, highlighting a letter written by late Princess Thembi Zulu, which reportedly went unanswered by the President.

The family faction's meeting at the Osuthu royal palace in Nongoma, KwaZulu-Natal, centered around strategizing the path forward after the legal decision, which they initially celebrated. Nonetheless, the President's appeal has reshaped the family's outlook, casting him in an adversarial light due to his stance.
