Passengers Robbed at Gunpoint on Taxi to Mozambique: Manhunt Underway

Passengers on a taxi headed for Mozambique fell victim to an armed robbery in the Mpumalanga province, leading to an intense search for the perpetrators by local police. The incident occurred on Friday evening in the small town of Garelane, located in Bushbuckridge.

According to Brigadier Selvy Mohlala, the provincial police spokesperson, the taxi, which was carrying 16 passengers and was traveling from Acornhoek, became the target of four assailants driving a white Toyota light delivery vehicle. The taxi driver observed the suspicious vehicle behind him, whose occupants were flashing lights in a possibly menacing manner. The driver, wary of the intentions of the following vehicle, opted not to stop until he reached the perceived safety of a nearby filling station.

Despite taking these precautions, the taxi and its passengers could not evade the ensuing misfortune. Once the driver halted at the petrol station, four armed men exited the trailing vehicle. The robbery swiftly escalated as one of the robbers fired a shot and the gang descended upon the driver. In the ensuing chaos, the robbers forcefully took a bag containing the passengers' passports and a sum of money, which was said to be a collective contribution by the commuters for the trip.

The cascade of criminality did not end with the theft of official documents and cash. The perpetrators also stripped the passengers of their cell phones, leaving them without means of communication. Although no physical injuries were reported in the aftermath of the robbery, the assailants managed to evade immediate capture by fleeing the scene.

The response from the police was prompt. A case of robbery was filed and a manhunt to apprehend the quartet of robbers is actively in progress. Detective Lieutenant Colonel Busisiwe Kunene has been point of contact for any leads, and the authorities are appealing to anyone with information to step forward.
