In a brazen daytime incident that has sent shockwaves through the Free State community, a school principal was kidnapped shortly after starting his day at Meloding Primary School. The Free State Police have since launched a full-scale manhunt for the perpetrators, who have been described as three men with accents from Lesotho.

The sequence of events began to unfold on the morning of Tuesday, 12 December, when the principal arrived at the school at approximately 7:10 a.m. in his Nissan NP200 bakkie, identifiable by its Free State registration number. After being granted entry by the security guard, the school's daily routine was abruptly disrupted when an unidentified man requested a meeting with the principal.

The timing didn't raise suspicion initially, as it coincided with the day scheduled for students to receive their report cards. However, the situation rapidly deteriorated after the security guard momentarily left his post to assist caterers with a cellphone charger – a critical error that left a gap for the assault.

Police spokesman Captain Stephen Thakeng provided a chilling account of the incident, detailing how the guard, upon returning to alert the principal about his idling vehicle, was ambushed and taken hostage by an individual posing as someone there to meet the head of the school.

The terror that ensued saw the principal physically restrained and silenced with sellotape, while two armed accomplices kept watch. The guard and school caretaker were searched and likewise bound, with the school's serene environment now the backdrop for a heinous crime.

Demanding money from the institution's funds, the assailants failed to access any. Instead, they absconded with the principal's vehicle, leaving behind a trail of questions and concerns regarding school safety.

Fortunately, the principal was later released unharmed, though traumatized by the ordeal, with the culprits still at large. The stolen vehicle, a white Nissan NP200 bakkie with registration plate FLR 387 FS, became a crucial element in the ongoing investigation.

The incident has thrust the issues of security and criminal activity within educational environments into the spotlight. Free State police are vigorously pursuing leads to apprehend those responsible for the kidnapping, business robbery, and carjacking.

Captain Thakeng emphasized the necessity of community involvement in resolving the case, urging anyone with information to come forward and contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111. The repercussions of this incident extend beyond the crime itself, affecting the sense of safety and well-being of students, parents, and school staff.

As the case develops, both the School and the Free State Department expect to apply lessons learned from this incident to strengthen safety protocols and support the establishment of safe learning environments for South Africa's youth.
