President Ramaphosa Vows to Clamp Down on Crime Amid Massive Police Recruitment Drive

However, the path to bolstering the police force is alight with tremendous challenges. Eyewitness News revealed that the SAPS has faced a dire loss of almost 10,000 detectives in the past six years, creating a critical gap in the law enforcement apparatus.

Furthermore, elite units such as the special task force and the national intervention unit have experienced significant attrition, with many members opting for careers in private security and VIP protection services. This brain drain leads to a depletion of specialized skills within the SAPS, which are vital in tackling complex and high-risk crime situations.

Despite these setbacks, President Ramaphosa was optimistic about the role the new recruits would fulfill, stating their deployment would include areas like public order policing, visible policing, units focusing on child protection and sexual offenses, and detective duties.
