In the vast wilderness that stretches across the Maseru border between South Africa and Lesotho, a surprising discovery was made by the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) - a well-established tree house inhabited by a Lesotho national. This unusual dwelling, encountered during a routine patrol, cast light on the multifaceted mission of the SANDF to secure the nation’s borders and the inventive measures taken by individuals to bypass border control.

The tree house find, equipped with electronics and a solar panel, was noted by a vigilant SANDF platoon, led by Lieutenant Mmanti Manamela, in September. It had been home to its Lesotho resident for nearly six years. Subsequent to the discovery, the man was deported, and his makeshift abode was destroyed.

This incident underscores just one aspect of the SANDF's expansive operation along the roughly 485-kilometer border it shares with Lesotho. As patrol efforts intensify, gaps in the frontier, which are often exploited for smuggling and illegal grazing, become surging points of illegal crossings during the festive season.

Human remains scattered along the border area grimly indicate the hazardous undertakings faced by those attempting to traverse the territories illegally. Besides human trafficking, the border is a hotspot for livestock theft, illegal grazing, and property damage, including the persistent cutting of the border fence.

Infantry Officer Captain Botshelo Life Phutiyagae highlighted the nearby Caledon River as a common route for criminal enterprises. Furthermore, he emphasized that local South African farmers and Lesotho nationals sometimes engage in illicit agreements exacerbating the crime rate.

The SANDF recorded arrests of 41 undocumented persons and the recovery of 40 stolen animals since October alone. They have also faced aggression from Lesotho nationals who, armed and seeking to liberate impounded livestock, have hurled stones at South African soldiers.

In response to these challenges, the SANDF has been intercepting trucks with illicit cargo and scrutinizing fraudulent documents at ports of entry. These physical confrontations, paired with their defensive approach, signal a need for innovation in border patrolling strategies.

As part of their adaptive measures, the SANDF is considering the deployment of technology to reinforce the capabilities of ground troops. Such advancements could include surveillance drones, enhanced communication systems, and progressive reconnaissance equipment, improving response times and monitoring abilities.

The SANDF’s dedication to border control remains resolute as they adapt to modern techniques to combat the complex web of cross-border criminal activities better. With a focus on safeguarding the nation's frontiers, the organization continues to evolve in its strategies to confront the illicit and oftentimes dangerous movements that challenge South Africa's security.
