Cape Town Bolsters Public Safety with Induction of 113 Newly Trained Officers

In a major boost to the enforcement of law and public safety within Cape Town, the City has infused fresh vigor into its ranks by welcoming 113 new officers to its Metro Police Department and Traffic Service. The 2023 cohort, consisting of 78 metro police and 35 traffic officers, have successfully completed an extensive training program at the City’s prestigious Safety and Security Directorate Training College.

The training regimen for these officers was nothing short of demanding. Spanning a period of 12 months, the road traffic law enforcement course sharpened their knowledge and skills in a variety of areas. The curriculum offered rigorous preparation, encompassing advanced firearm handling, executing roadblocks, efficient point-duty operations, implementing restraining techniques, and developing agility – qualities imperative for effective and timely response to diverse situations on the ground.

As part of their tailored education, Metro Police trainees took part in an extra six-month Law Enforcement Skills Programme. This specialization was intensive, focusing on several key areas including crime prevention strategies, tactical street survival, professional conduct, and tackling sensitive situations like domestic violence and child protection – issues of paramount importance in current societal contexts.

The Traffic Learnership Programme is a testament to the City of Cape Town's commitment to cultivating a world-class law enforcement team. With thousands of applicants each year, this highly competitive program filters candidates through a rigorous selection process that begins with physical assessments and culminates in extensive background checks. Such meticulous screening is indicative of the standards set by the City for its security personnel.
