Durban's CCTV Network Fully Functional Ahead of Festive Season, Says eThekwini Municipality

In a timely move right before the surge of the festive season's activities, eThekwini Municipality has proclaimed that all CCTV cameras in Durban are now fully functional. This assurance comes as a response to the heightened safety concerns with thousands of travelers poised to descend upon the coastal city, expecting idyllic vacations.

The city's ambitious project to overhaul its vital surveillance network commenced in September and was strategically finalized by November 30, meeting the set deadline. Mayor Mxolisi Kaunda expressed deep satisfaction with the work done, emphasizing that the completion of the CCTV repairs is a critical development in the city’s fight against crime.

Durban's journey to a fully operative CCTV system hasn't been without its difficulties. The city previously acknowledged the daunting challenge they faced with nearly 90% of the camera network rendered dysfunctional – a situation exacerbated by last year's damaging floods that destroyed key infrastructure like fibre cables necessary for the cameras' operation. The budget allocated for this herculean task was more than R100 million, a clear demonstration of the municipality's commitment to public safety.

The urgency of maintaining effective surveillance systems was highlighted earlier this year following the tragic shooting of rapper AKA and his companion Tibz. The incident cast a spotlight on the region's security apparatus, particularly the ineffectuality of street cameras at the time, with worries about the repercussions on policing and criminal investigations.

The municipality is confident that with revitalized CCTV monitoring, as well as the heightened presence of law enforcement during the festive season, the prospects for criminal activities will significantly diminish. Mayor Kaunda emphasized not only will this technological upliftment assist in deterring crime, but it will also streamline traffic management, magnify emergency response effectiveness, and optimize the dispatch of municipal resources.

Looking forward, the surveillance framework is expected to extend beyond the urban center, reaching into the residential vicinities, townships, and suburbs – areas typically marginalized from such advancements. This rollout plan delineates the municipality's long-term vision for a digitally fortified city.
