Two Women Apprehended for Unlawful Shooting at Suspect's Funeral in Tsolo

The peace and solemnity expected at a funeral were disrupted in October this year when shots rang out at a Tsolo burial ceremony. This led to the arrest of two women, Bongo Yonela Dipa, 24, and Chumisa Phunguzwa, 35, who have now been implicated in a grave incident of reckless endangerment, causing harm and disregard for the law.

According to Warrant Officer Ndiphiwe Mhlakuvana, a spokesperson for the local authorities, Dipa and Phunguzwa participated in the funeral services of a suspect involved in a cash-in-transit robbery near the N2 Tsolo junction. During the ceremony held at the Mcetywa location on the 15th of October 2023, the duo is alleged to have discharged firearms indiscriminately, an act that not only desecrated the somber occasion but resulted in bodily harm to an individual present at the event.

The resultant chaos and disregard for public safety catalyzed a swift response from local law enforcement, with the case promptly escalated to the Provincial Cash-in-Transit Task Team of the Hawks, signifying the urgency and gravity of the situation. The investigative work of the Hawks, renowned for their tenacity in dealing with organized crime, led to the eventual arrest of the women involved.

During their appearance at the Tsolo Magistrates Court, Dipa and Phunguzwa were both granted bail at the sum of R2,000 apiece. They are presently facing serious allegations, including attempted murder, illegal possession of a firearm, and the unlawful discharge of a firearm. These charges are severe by any measure, reflecting the consequences of their actions and the potential threat they posed to the community.
