With the summer season in full swing and Cape Town's beaches bustling with activity, the City of Cape Town has embarked on an innovative initiative to combat the blight of litter along its picturesque coastlines. The Public Awareness, Communication, and Education (PACE) Team, together with their charismatic anti-litter mascot, Bingo, are making waves with a unique approach to waste awareness.

Navigating the shores as part of the City’s Festive Season Waste Awareness Programme, PACE introduces a series of captivating activities designed to engage beachgoers in understanding the impact of waste on our environment, especially during peak times when littering often increases exponentially.

The scheduled lineup of activities is as enticing as it is educational, offering something for everyone. Visitors can expect to dive into volleyball games where Bingo doubles as both mascot and teammate, participate in "spot the Bingo bin" challenges to sharpen their waste segregation skills, groove to lively music, and partake in dance-offs. The extrinsic motivation of prizes serves as an excellent incentive for participation, and it underscores the importance of making clean-up efforts both enjoyable and rewarding.

Alderman Grant Twigg, Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Waste Management, has extended a heartfelt invitation to visitors to join in the fun and play their part in safeguarding the city's natural havens. "Respect our beaches and recreational areas this festive season," implores Twigg. "If everyone can make sure they bin it in a Bingo bin, we can make it a summer to remember for all the right reasons," he adds, highlighting the collective responsibility of locals and tourists alike.

The campaign's success relies on the symbiosis of amusement and environmental protection, and it is articulated through the presence of Bingo the anti-litter mascot—a figure that resonates with young and old, reinforcing positive waste disposal practices without the need for didacticism.

The programme is scheduled to touch down on various popular beaches between 10 am and 3 pm during the holiday months of December and January, offering an interactive and educational respite from the sun-soaked leisure. The City of Cape Town is extending a clever nod to local tourism as well, teaming up with Cape {town} Etc to offer discounts and car deals, which not only promote exploration of the city's remarkable environs but also encourage participation in the Waste Awareness Programme.

Whether it's a day out at the beach or looking for new adventures within the city, Cape Town is making every effort to intertwine environmental consciousness with its residents' and visitors' summertime experiences. The innovative campaign is undoubtedly a step in the right direction towards ensuring that the city's shores remain unsullied, ensuring a legacy of sustainability for generations to come.
