ACSA Strengthens Hand Baggage Rules for Safer Festive Season Travel

Johannesburg - This festive season, travellers using the Airports Company South Africa's (ACSA) network of airports can expect more stringent enforcement of hand luggage regulations. ACSA has declared that it will be reinforcing its baggage rules to enhance both safety and compliance for passengers and airlines. With these efforts, passengers are urged to mind their hand baggage size and weight, adhering to the latest requirements.

Under the new regulations, passengers will be subject to limitations on the number of hand baggage items, as well as weight restrictions. Notably, this includes specifications for slimline laptop bags, which should contain only a laptop and charger, and nothing more than these essentials. These items are scrutinised to reduce the chances of illegal or potentially dangerous items passing through security checkpoints.

The strategic crackdown on hand baggage comes as part of broader measures by ACSA to mitigate crime and ensure passenger safety at critical points of travel. The Group Executive for Corporate Services at ACSA, Laurene Less, assured that the ultimate goal is to provide a secure and smooth airport experience for travelers.

ACSA's initiative has garnered support from key industry partners such as the Board of Airline Representatives of South Africa (BARSA) and the Airlines Association of Southern Africa (AASA). George Mothema, the CEO of BARSA, highlighted the collective benefit derived from harmonized hand baggage policies applicable to all flights. From southern Africa's skies to international routes, there is an emphasis on the value added by consistency and standardization in baggage regulations.

AASA CEO Aaron Munetsi spotlighted the safety advantage, noting how the policies are set to thwart overweight bags that may jeopardize aircraft and passenger safety. The rolling out of these regulations is reflective of a zero-tolerance stance on criminal activities and an overarching commitment to the wellbeing of the traveling public.

With festive travel often seeing a spike in airport activity, these regulatory enhancements are critical.
