Arrests Following Lethal Cash-In-Transit Heist in Limpopo

In a dramatic response to a violent heist that shook the Sekhukhune District in Limpopo, South African Police Service (SAPS) officers have successfully apprehended three suspected criminals involved in a cash-in-transit robbery. The incident, which resulted in the fatality of a security guard, saw the suspects absconding with a large sum of money after bombing a security vehicle on the R37 Road.

SAPS spokesperson Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba detailed how the events unfolded. On Saturday, the armed assailants attacked the cash transport, laying out a scenario that might have been cut from a blockbuster crime movie. The aftermath left a community on edge and a security professional dead. The audacity of the assault was matched by a relentless pursuit from the provincial tracking team.

Leveraging information from sources, the police sprung into action. By Sunday morning, their diligence paid off when they spotted a white Hyundai Creta, associated with the suspects, just outside Hazyview in Mpumalanga. Despite their attempt to evade capture, the suspects' getaway came to a halt a mere five kilometers from where they were originally spotted.

During the arrest, further evidence solidified their connection to the recent cash-in-transit robbery—a discovery that hints at a well-organized criminal operation. The suspects were found with expired weapons cartridges from an AK47, alongside a sum of cash that had been taken during their heinous act.

As the investigation deepened, a third associate was identified in Burgersfort, comfortably clothed in newly purchased attire worth close to R50,000 and accompanied by more of the stolen money. Notably, it emerged that all three had been on bail for a previous, similarly executed robbery that took place in 2018—suggesting a pattern of ongoing criminal behavior.

The suspects now face very serious charges, including robbery with aggravating circumstances and murder. They are expected to appear at the Moroke Magistrate’s Court on January 22, and the Mecklenburg Magistrate’s Court on November 28. These proceedings will be a testament to SAPS's commitment to justice and maintaining order, especially during the holiday season.

Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, the provincial commissioner of police in Limpopo, praised the tracking team for their exemplary work and dedication, showcasing SAPS's unwavering commitment to public safety.
