In an unfortunate turn of events, approximately 350 residents of Koos de la Rey informal settlement in Pretoria North have become victims of a tragic fire incident. On late Thursday afternoon, emergency services were scrambled to the scene, where a massive fire had engulfed makeshift homes within and around an abandoned factory structure. In a swift response, the Tshwane emergency services team, led by spokesperson Charles Mabaso, battled vigorously against the flames, but not before scores of shacks were reduced to ash.

Moving rapidly to support the devastated community, emergency service workers treated two individuals for smoke inhalation. The quick medical intervention allowed for their subsequent release after a short stay at local hospitals, Steve Biko Academic Hospital and Tshane District Hospital. In addition, a team that included the Gauteng emergency medical services (EMS), the South African Police Service, and other local authorities worked in concert to coordinate aid and provide immediate relief to those displaced by the fire.

Amid the chaos, Gauteng EMS provided transport for the displaced residents to the Pretoria North community hall, which has been set up as a temporary shelter. Generosity within the community was made evident as hundreds of blankets and mattresses were distributed to provide some level of comfort to the affected families.

Search efforts continue as the precise cause of the fire remains unknown. It has initiated a full investigation spearheaded by the Tshwane emergency services department, and insight as to whether the fire was an accident or the result of foul play is eagerly anticipated by the community.

An impromptu support system, comprised of local government departments, the metro police, human settlements and health departments, the City of Tshane, and several community organizations, banded together to serve the impacted settlement. The incident has highlighted an urgent need for structured and safer living conditions for residents of informal settlements—an issue that, regrettably, comes to the foreground only in the wake of such calamities.

In times of adversity, the strength of a community is tested, and in Pretoria North, the response of various stakeholders demonstrates a beacon of hope and communal solidarity in the face of tragedy. The community's resilience is foundational to the rebuilding efforts and a testament to the indomitable human spirit.
