City of Cape Town Invests R30 Million for Staircase Repairs in Public Housing

In a significant development for public housing, the City of Cape Town has announced an investment of R30 million towards the upgrading of staircases in several neighborhoods. Councillor Carl Pophaim, the Mayoral Committee Member for Human Settlements, disclosed this essential enhancement for the districts of Lavender Hill, Lotus River, and Ocean View. This is part of a broader initiative that has seen approximately R200 million spent on staircase refurbishments in public housing since 2018.

This recent financial injection is to ensure that more than 1,300 staircases identified as high-priority receive the necessary repairs or replacements. With a substantial three-year budget exceeding R1.2 billion earmarked for housing maintenance and upgrades, the local government is addressing the emergent need for safer and more reliable infrastructure in its rental stock.

The ongoing staircase program has already impacted various communities across the metro, including Hangberg, Atlantis, Hanover Park, Manenberg, and others—a testament to the City's large-scale commitment as one of South Africa's most prominent public housing landlords. Currently, these efforts benefit an estimated 160,000 residents who are part of the City's affordable rental housing scheme.

Councillor Pophaim emphasized the significance of this initiative, describing it as a "game-changer" during his visit to Lavender Hill where work has commenced. He has asserted a personal commitment to meeting the demands of public housing, ensuring that safety remains paramount. The programme has a completion goal of June 30, 2024, and will address the upgrade requirements of about 30 buildings, encompassing 70 staircases.
