A distressing turn of events has unfolded in the local law enforcement community as a Gauteng constable has been implicated in the murder of a fellow officer. Constable Bongimpilo Bengu, stationed at the Parkview visible policing unit, was arrested on Tuesday due to suspicion of involvement in the murder of Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) officer, Constable Sibusiso Zikalala. This tragic event originally took place in June of this year.

The charges against Bengu were brought to light by spokesperson Robbie Raburabu of the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID). According to IPID, the incident occurred outside a Braamfontein nightclub, where Zikalala was gunned down in the presence of his wife, following a dispute between the two officers.

The aftermath of the shooting was captured on video and shared extensively on various social media platforms. This media attention led Zikalala's grieving family to make a public plea for the respect of their privacy, asking the public to refrain from circulating the footage.

Despite the severity of the charges, Bengu was granted a bail amounting to R5000 during his preliminary court hearing and he is set to reappear in court on 25 January next year.
