A pall of somber sadness descended over Hollywood, as news of popular 'Friends' actor, Matthew Perry's untimely demise underlined another tragic chapter in his well-documented struggle with addiction. Perry, 54, was found lifeless in his Los Angeles home on Saturday, following a reported drowning incident in his house's hot tub.

The actor, whose portrayal of 'Chandler Bing' on 'Friends' made him a beloved figure worldwide, was known for his battle with drug addiction, a saga that threatened his life on multiple fronts. Despite his reported victory over addiction, TMZ reported that medics responding to Saturday's emergency call discovered a host of prescribed substances in Perry's residence.

Counter to previous reports, the medics found no illegal narcotics at the scene, upon their arrival. However, they reportedly stumbled upon a variety of anti-depressants, anti-anxiety pills, and a COPD medication. Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) treatments are typically prescribed to patients dealing with emphysema or chronic bronchitis. Perry, a heavy smoker in his life, possibly was using these medications for COPD treatment.

The Pacific Palisades home, where Perry lived reportedly alone following his breakup with ex-fiancee and talent manager Molly Hurwitz in 2021, is currently under thorough investigation by the LA County Coroner. They aim to perform a complete toxicology exam, which could unveil the presence of any drugs in Perry's system at the time of his death. However, the results are expected to take months to materialize. Police officials have stated that no foul play is suspected in Perry's death.

Even though Perry played the humorous Chandler Bing for ten seasons on 'Friends', his personal life was strained with addiction issues, which he candidly expressed in his memoir 'Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing: A Candid, Darkly Funny Book.' Perry's fight with dependency was so severe; it almost claimed his life in 2018 when he suffered a gastrointestinal perforation due to extreme opiate usage. Perry, who briefly slipped into a coma and had to rely on a colostomy bag until his colon healed, laid bare the upsetting realities of substance abuse in his memoir.
