Cape Town's high-performing Highway Patrol Unit (HPU), introduced by the city’s Traffic Service in October 2022, marks an incredible milestone: 1,000 arrests within the first 12 months of operation. This translates to a diligent efficiency of around 85 arrests per month.
The 33-strong team, set to expand with an additional 12 members in December, is celebrated for its pivotal role in reducing road incidents and pioneering technology adoption in law enforcement. Their gallant efforts in roving patrols across major city routes, collaborating with other Traffic Service units and enforcement services, have made them a valuable community asset.
Among their wide array of achievements over the past year stands their remarkable seizure of about one thousand mandrax tablets during a traffic stop on the N1.
The real differentiator for the HPU, however, lies in their innovative introduction of advanced tech-tools in their operations. The unit has adopted in-vehicle camera technology and body-worn cameras, setting the stage for wider implementation across other units and departments.
Currently, all 33 HPU vehicles are outfitted with front, rear, and ANPR cameras. These tech tools not only gather evidence but also offer real-time feeds enhancing situational awareness. This strategic advantage was proven when officers used captured footage to identify, and subsequently impound, a reckless taxi driver.
Alderman JP Smith, Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, extolled the persistent efforts of the team, saying, "The impact of the Highway Patrol Unit cannot be underestimated, and as we increase the staff complement, we expect to see even greater returns from this team. It has been a welcome boost to our existing resources and will be an integral part of our enforcement efforts heading into the festive season."
