As Cape Town gears up for its bustling festive season, law enforcement is not lagging behind. The city's Highway Patrol Unit (HPU), in use since October 2022, has made a significant impact over the past 12 months, making 1,023 arrests accounting for 27% of all arrests by the Traffic Service. These achievements don't fall short of commendation, particularly considering the unit's operational infancy and size.
Starting with a staff complement of twenty-five officers, the HPU's successful inception has seen it grow to thirty-three, with an additional twelve set to join by early December. The team's primary responsibilities include roving patrols on major routes around Cape Town, collaborating with other Traffic Service units and fellow enforcement services.
In one notable incident, a taxi driver evaded capture during a traffic stop by driving recklessly. The HPU officers identified the vehicle using recorded footage and proceeded to impound it the following day.
"The impact of the Highway Patrol Unit cannot be underestimated," says JP Smith, the city's safety mayco member, "and as we increase the staff complement, we expect to see even greater returns from this team. It has been a welcome boost to our existing resources, and will be an integral part of our enforcement efforts heading into the festive season."
The HPU’s dedication isn't just about manpower; it also involves adopting innovative technology. As early adopters of in-vehicle and body-worn camera technology, their experiences have been invaluable to the broader rollout for other departments within the Safety and Security Directorate.
