Gauteng Premier David Makhura has called into question the African National Congress's (ANC’s) coalitions with the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) at a recent ANC’s National Executive Committee (NEC) presentation. Makhura, in his address, highlighted the potential harm caused by the alliances and suggested that they must be reviewed.

The EFF, described by Makhura as "proto-fascist" and "anti-establishment" is believed to be using its partnerships with the ANC to undercut the governing party's support. This assertion, made during the presentation, urges the NEC, as the ANC’s highest decision-making body, to contemplate disbanding its coalitions in local governments with the EFF.

The debate over the ANC's collaboration with the EFF comes amid simmering tensions and divergent political ideologies within the two parties. Makhura's recommendation puts the spotlight on the dynamics of coalition politics while throwing into relief whether these alliances have benefitted or undermined the ANC's governance.

In South African politics where coalition governments can potentially shift power dynamics and impact the political narrative, Makhura's call for review could mark a significant turning point in the continuing conversation about the effectiveness and utility of the ANC's alliances.
