In a bid to stabilize rocky bilateral relations between the United States and China, China's top diplomat, Wang Yi, has made a call for 'in-depth and comprehensive' dialogue. Wang Yi, who also serves on the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, made his intentions known while in Washington DC on Thursday.
His trip to the United States comes as a return visit following US Secretary of State Antony Blinken's China tour in June. This exemplifies the reciprocal efforts both nations are willing to invest into smoothing out their relationships.
Prior to engaging in discussions with Blinken, Wang Yi addressed reporters, acknowledging the differences and shared interests that exist between the two major countries. He voiced the need for China and the US to not only resume dialogue but also to engage in intense and comprehensive discussions.
Wang summarized the purpose of the dialogue as enhancing mutual comprehension, reducing misunderstanding or errors in judgement, and continually seeking to build consensus. This, he believes, will help to stabilize bilateral ties and guide them back onto a path of continued healthy, stable, and sustainable growth.
Despite the existing tensions in China-US relations, Wang expressed a nonchalant approach, placing emphasis on the importance of adhering to international law, observing the terms of the three China-US joint communiques, and following the developmental trend of times.
The Thursday dialogue between Wang and Blinken was labelled as constructive according to the statement released by the Chinese Foreign Ministry, with an in-depth exchange of views on China-U.S. relations and issues of mutual interest.
The two parties will continue their discussions on Friday morning, further elaborating on the initial dialogue.
