In a recent statement by the World Rugby, Bongi Mbonambi, the South African hooker, has been absolved of any charges pertaining to racist behavior during a match. He was accused by England's rugby player Tom Curry of alleged racial slurs during the World Cup semi-final.
The decision has been made after examining various types of evidence which includes match footage, audio transcripts of the match, and testimonies from both teams. The governing body announced that due to a lack of substantial evidence to support the allegations, no further action would be taken in this regard.
England's Tom Curry had previously lodged the complaint after his team lost 16-15 to the Springboks in the semi-final. According to him, about half an hour into the match, Mbonambi made racist remarks against him. However, the referee on duty, Ben O'Keefe from New Zealand, advised him not to retaliate.
There have been mixed reactions to this verdict, with the English Football Union (RFU) expressing their disappointment and condemning the hateful comments. Despite the controversy, Mbonambi, who was crowned world champion in 2019 against Curry's England, is eyeing the final of the World Cup.
The spotlight is now on the World Cup final where the South African team will be facing the All Blacks at Stade de France. As both teams look to secure their fourth title, rugby fans around the world anticipate an electrifying match.
